It’s Saturday already and time for the last snowboard event of the 2011 Canada Games: snowboard cross. After yesterday’s training day in the rain and temperatures around 6°C, the weather shifted dramatically overnight to -8°C and violent winds. Despite the freezing temperatures, the athletes put on a great show in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

With very close times posted by the top 16 boys and girls in the qualification races, the finals were sure to be exciting.

Tayler Wilton (ON) won the women’s event, while Thomas Pitman (BC) took gold on the men’s side. British Columbia won the most medals of the day with three, followed by Quebec (two) and Ontario (one).

The weather was perfect in Martock for the halfpipe events.

Under a clear ski and bright sun, but mostly in front of TSN cameras for live coverage, canadian athletes jumped in the 14 feet high and 300 feet long halfpipe.

The riders offered an exciting show and a tight race to canadian fans who gathered in such huge numbers that the roads leading to Martock were jammed.

On the girl’s side, two riders were the pride of Ontario as Quincy Carolyn Korte-King won the gold medal, and Kiersten Higginson took the bronze. Dallas Rourte from Nova-Scotia managed to slip in between the two Ontarians, taking home the silver medal.

The boys offered a stunning final with Jeremy Page (NS) winning the gold medal, Joe Hills (AB) finishing second for silver, and Francis Lachance (Que.) winning the bronze medal.

The Parallel Giant Slalom event kicked off the 2011 Canada Games snowboard competition at Ski Martock today.

18 women and 24 men completed the qualifying runs on the technical course in strong wind conditions, with the 16 top men and 8 top women advancing to the finals. Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were represented in the men’s finals, while racers from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and British Columbia qualified on the women’s side.

The finals featured an exciting battle between Ontario and Quebec. Peculiarly, Quebec filled the top two spots in the men’s event, with Ontario in 3^rd and 4^th, while the reverse scenario unfolded in the women’s final.

After a series of tight races, Sébastien Beaulieu (QC) took gold ahead of Indrik Trahan (QC) and Richard Evanoff (ON). In the women’s event, Tayler Wilton (ON)  finished first, followed by Hannah Silk (ON) and Jade Depond (QC).

Congratulations to all the racers! The snowboard events continue with half-pipe training tomorrow and the half-pipe competition on Thursday, which will be broadcast live on TSN/RDS.
