Halifax, NS – February 18, 2011 – The defending champions from Ontario will go home with gold after downing previously undefeated Team Alberta 8-7 in an exciting overtime final at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

Samantha Nosal (St. Clements) scored the winner 13 minutes into overtime, assisted by Samantha McIntosh (London) and Sydney Granger (Dorchester). Ashley Miller (St. Mary’s) faced 32 shots between the pipes for Ontario and Breanna Beck (Red Deer) fielded 52 shots. The game was officiated by Brent Bunting (Barrie) and Janyce Gunn (Oshawa).

“There was a bit of pressure and we knew we had a good team so it was going to come down to who wanted it most. It could have gone either way,” said Nosal just after receiving her gold medal. Nosal, who celebrated her 18th birthday today, has big aspirations in ringette. “Some day I would love to play on the national team and in the National Ringette League.”

In the bronze medal final, Quebec downed Saskatchewan 6-5. Laval’s Genevieve Pepper scored two goals and three assists and her teammate Kim Aspirot (Montreal) posted a pair of goals and two assists. Gatineau’s Claudie Carpentier faced 31 shots between the pipes for Quebec and Emerald Park’s Carmen Agar faced 38 shots for Saskatchewan. Regina’s Kailee Karchewski picked up two goals and an assist for Saskatchewan. The game was officiated by Benoit Ducharme (Montreal) and Lorie Grant (Kitchener).

In placement games earlier this morning, New Brunswick beat British Columbia 6-3 and Manitoba downed Nova Scotia 11-4.

Halifax, NS – February 17, 2011 – Alberta remained undefeated, downing Quebec 4-3 in semi-final play today, and will go for gold tomorrow at the Canada Winter Games. They will meet up with Ontario, who beat Saskatchewan 5-2 in today’s second semi-final game. Quebec and Saskatchewan will battle it out for bronze.

In the first semi-final game, Alberta opened the scoring and had a 3-0 lead at the half. Although Quebec came out strong in the second period and tied it up, Calgary’s Emily Webb managed to dump in the game-winning goal for a final score of 4-3.

Ontario opened the scoring with two goals in the second semi-final game. While Saskatchewan managed to get two back in the second, London’s Sammy McIntosh scored three in a row to give the defending Canada Winter Game champions a 5-3 win and a ticket to the gold medal game tomorrow.

In placement games earlier this morning, Manitoba beat New Brunswick 4-2 and Nova Scotia downed British Columbia 5-2. Further placement games will take place tomorrow morning, with New Brunswick playing British Columbia and Manitoba meeting Nova Scotia.

Halifax, NS – February 16, 2011 – With everything on the line, ringette athletes came out to win and fans were treated to some exciting quarterfinal games at Cole Harbour Place today.

In the early morning game, British Columbia downed Prince Edward Island 10-3 to move onto the quarterfinal against Alberta later in the day. Salmon Arm’s Erika Lipsett and Maple Ridge’s Samantha Gropp each picked up five points in the game, while Langley’s Chantelle Fawcett picked up a hat trick.

In the biggest upset of the day, Saskatchewan beat Manitoba 3-2. Stephanie Zimmer, Alysha McEachern and Kailee Karchewski, all from Regina, posted singles, with the Manitoba goals coming from Jena Gallant (Winnipeg) and Sylvie Piche (La Broquerie). Carmen Agar (Emerald Park) made some stellar saves to keep Saskatchewan in the lead near the end of the game.

Despite having a full house of fans, Nova Scotia was not able to pull off a win and Quebec downed the hometown favorites 8-3. Montreal’s Natali St-Germain posted a hat trick for Quebec and Nova Scotia singles came from Brittany Avery (Hammonds Plains), Paige Grandbois (Ottawa) and Morgan McLellan (Herring Cove).

When Ontario and New Brunswick met up, Ontario opened the scoring with three goals. Bouctouche’s Martine Caissie then scored an impressive three goals in 57 seconds. Ontario went on to beat New Brunswick 12-5. Mitchell’s Emily Bakker posted a hat trick and two assists and Dorchester’s Kaylee Whitcroft scored a hat trick.

In the last game of the day, Alberta beat British Columbia 10-3. Kelsey Hupka (Fort Saskatchewan), Danielle Provonost (Onoway) and Alexandra Saizew (Calgary) all posted a pair of goals and an assist, and Calgary’s Emily Webb picked up two goals.

Quebec will meet Alberta and Saskatchewan will meet Ontario in semi-final play tomorrow.

Halifax, NS – February 15, 2011 – Round-robin play has finished up at the 2011 Canada Winter Games and teams will now move on to the qualification round. Despite having some rather close calls, Alberta managed to remain undefeated throughout round-robin play and claimed the top spot in Pool B. Manitoba claimed second place in Pool B, while Nova Scotia placed third, New Brunswick placed fourth and PEI came in fifth.

In today’s first game, Manitoba dealt Nova Scotia their first loss with a 4-1 score in front of a packed house. Melissa Sieben (Winnipeg), Lauren Morse (Starbuck), Sylvie Piche (La Broquerie) and Sarah Lesperance (Winnipeg) all picked up singles for Manitoba, while Lower Sackville’s Krista Vey scored the lone goal for Nova Scotia.

New Brunswick shutout Prince Edward Island 6-0 in the second game of the day, with Bouctouche’s Martine Caissie picking up a hat trick and an assist. Dieppe’s Jasmine LeBlanc recorded the shutout between the pipes for New Brunswick.

Nova Scotia met up with Alberta later in the day and while they netted the first goal of the game and were only trailing by one goal after the first period, Alberta went on to beat the hometown favorites 8-2. Alberta’s Danielle Pronovost (Onoway) scored a pair and an assist and Fort Saskatchewan’s Kelsey Hupka picked up two. Krista Vey and Morgan McLellan (Herring Cove) scored the Nova Scotia goals.

In the last game of the day, Manitoba dealt Prince Edward Island a tough 11-4 loss, with Melissa Sieben, Lauren Morse and Sarah Lesperance all scoring two goals and an assist in the game.

Halifax, NS – February 13, 2011 – While Alberta is the only team to remain undefeated at the 2011 Canada Winter Games it is still anybody’s game, with plenty of close competition taking place Cole Harbour Place today.

PEI played their first game this morning, but faced a tough 8-1 loss to Alberta. Montague’s Rebecca Collings picked up the lone goal for PEI. Jillian Basterash (St. Albert), Jocelyn Stock (Calgary) and Danielle Pronovost (Onoway) all scored pairs for Alberta, with singles coming from Emily Webb and Shaundra Bruvall, both from Calgary.

Ontario was favored going into the match-up against British Columbia, but the west coast underdogs made an impressive comeback and won 5-4 in overtime. Ontario was up 3-2 at the half, British Columbia responded with two and then Ontario’s Samantha Nosal (St. Clements) tied it up to force overtime. Salmon Arm’s Erika Lipsett scored the overtime winner for BC.

Another close game took place when Quebec and Saskatchewan met this afternoon. Tied 1-1 at the half, the teams rallied back and forth in the second and with 19 seconds left in the game with a score of 4-4, Laval’s Genevieve Pepper popped in a goal to secure the 5-4 win for Quebec.

In the last game of the day, Manitoba downed New Brunswick 8-2. Bouctouche’s Martine Caissie scored the pair for New Brunswick while Winnipeg’s Melissa Sieben was the leading scorer for Manitoba with two goals and an assist.
