Halifax, NS – February 13, 2011 – While Alberta is the only team to remain undefeated at the 2011 Canada Winter Games it is still anybody’s game, with plenty of close competition taking place Cole Harbour Place today.
PEI played their first game this morning, but faced a tough 8-1 loss to Alberta. Montague’s Rebecca Collings picked up the lone goal for PEI. Jillian Basterash (St. Albert), Jocelyn Stock (Calgary) and Danielle Pronovost (Onoway) all scored pairs for Alberta, with singles coming from Emily Webb and Shaundra Bruvall, both from Calgary.
Ontario was favored going into the match-up against British Columbia, but the west coast underdogs made an impressive comeback and won 5-4 in overtime. Ontario was up 3-2 at the half, British Columbia responded with two and then Ontario’s Samantha Nosal (St. Clements) tied it up to force overtime. Salmon Arm’s Erika Lipsett scored the overtime winner for BC.
Another close game took place when Quebec and Saskatchewan met this afternoon. Tied 1-1 at the half, the teams rallied back and forth in the second and with 19 seconds left in the game with a score of 4-4, Laval’s Genevieve Pepper popped in a goal to secure the 5-4 win for Quebec.
In the last game of the day, Manitoba downed New Brunswick 8-2. Bouctouche’s Martine Caissie scored the pair for New Brunswick while Winnipeg’s Melissa Sieben was the leading scorer for Manitoba with two goals and an assist.
